Senator Cox in Pollock Pines

May 22, 2009

The Memorial Day holiday weekend began in true patriotic style with a rare appearance of a California state senator in Pollock Pines.  On Friday night, May 22nd, Senator Dave Cox spoke to community residents at the Pollock Pines Community Church at 6:00 PM.  Legislative analysis and the budget were primary focus areas as the Senator explained that California is second to the last (only to New Jersey) in being a business friendly government.  Senator Cox, a Business Administration graduate with a Master of Science Degree, declared that if businesses are struggling, they need only look to our state government as an example of what not to do to encourage good, healthy, growing economy.  As such, many businesses are moving to Florida and Texas where taxes are not as intrusive and paralyzing as they are to the California businessperson.   California needs to stabilize its economy before there can be any economic development.

Senator Cox, a Rotarian himself, thanked the Pollock Pines-Camino Rotary Club as the primary service organization responsible for inviting him to the community.  The event was also sponsored by CEDAPP and the Dogwood Garden Club.  The Rotary Club will make a contribution to the PolioPlus Foundation (also generously supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).  The Senator made a contribution to the sponsoring service clubs who have chosen to give it to the Community Church to help with their Friday night community dinners.

If Memorial Day is about remembering those who have served our country, the Senator’s gracious appearance, his contribution, and the pay-it-forward approach of the service organizations are all a tribute to those who fight so valiantly to protect the rest of us so that we can have the freedom to meet in gatherings such as these.
